Yesterday was actually quite interesting. I sat in on the working group all day and really enjoyed the discourse (although I've been told I must be stark raving mad because many think it's akin to watching paint dry). There was some interesting discussion regarding bills of lading and carrier indemnity. I actually found it easy to follow the discussion and came away with a lot of answers...and not just a few questions. Not only did I enjoy the discussion, but I was sitting in the back of the room and thus got to watch the delegates. Turkey's assistant was taking a nap after lunch - looked comfy. Romania sent a very well dressed young woman to represent them who surfed the internet all day. I've come up with a slogan for their thoughts on Carriage of Goods by Sea: "No port, no problems!" I guess if you're a land-locked country, you're not really worried about a carrier dumping 400 Tonnes of sugar in your port and high-tailing it back to Atlanta.
This morning was beyond interesting - I went back for the morning session. Around 10:15, the translators stopped translating and the English translator said - in a rather panicked voice - "The Translators would like to advise the delegation that we must cease translating at this time as there is a fire in the translation booth." The delegates all sat still for a minute (the guy who was talking just kept going - he obviously hadn't heard), then the ones that were listening to the English "channel"(channel 3 for those of you that are playing along at home) turned around and looked up into the booths. The guy sitting next to me looked at me and said "Well, that's highly irregular." No one seemed terribly concerned - excepting, of course, the poor translators up in the booths full of smoke. They moved the Working Group to another room with the expectation that - providing the Rotunda isn't Krispy Kreme'd in the meantime - we'll be back in our room this afternoon. Adventures at the UN!!!
