The BBC had a piece this morning on Iraqi citizens who are seeking asylum in Britian and the United States and they were speaking with several refugees who were illegally in Jordan & trying to get out. They were saying that Britian, as a human rights country, should automatically grant them asylum because of the situation and the occupation. My first reaction is "what?!" However, upon further reflection - what IS our responsibility? We've occupied this area - sending in our troops (which - incidentally - whatever happened to Afghanistan? We still haven't attacked the Al Quieda (don't even know how to SPELL that) issue.) . What is our responsibility to the innocent people that live there? The children, the families, the elderly? What sort of duty do we owe people there? Do we owe them anything? If so, what? Is our duty fiscal? Asylum? Would granting asylum in this country eventually lead to fiscal support anyway? When you consider that many of the people who are seeking refuge here don't have the financial means to support themselves here...would we not eventally end up giving them social support anyhow? Is there sufficient community here for them? Is this country ready for that?
Too many questions, not enough answers.
