OK, so now I'm doing everything I can to figure out HOW I can go to Europe - at least at first - with JUST what I can fit in my backpack. Today in Crim Law I was chatting with a girl that did Edinburgh & London LAST year, she said to leave the laptop at home. They didn't need it & everything was just fine with paper. My parents can ship the laptop (which I AM going to need in Vienna because during the semester I'll be working on my long paper/independent research project and I'll need my computer to work on that) and all my suits & such to Vienna for me. My only hang up is we need a suit for dressy events while we're in Edinburgh/London, which the requisite dress shoes, suit & trappings are going to take up QUITE a bit of room. So - my options are:
1. Suck it up & take that stuff with me in a suitcase. Ship the suitcase to Loralei & Hans in Sydney, then I can bring it back with me on the plane to Frankfurt and go straight to Vienna.
2. Leave it with Matt's sister in London, then when I get back to Europe, take a flight to London to get my stuff before returning to the continent to go to Vienna. Considering the proximity of Frankfurt to Vienna versus that of London to Vienna, this does not seem like the most practical solution.
3. Try to stuff a black suit & shoes into my really fully backpack. Hope it doesn't get totally mashed. Take older black shoes that I can ditch in London without too much remorse and stuff the (eek! Expensive & much loved) black suit to the bottom of the backpack. Have it dry cleaned in Vienna. Problem solved.
The more I think on it, option 3 is likely to be the most practical. I will need to be living with less STUFF in my life from the middle of May until the end of August. I will need to learn to live with fewer clothes, I won't have the luxury of all my books and shoes. But I think this is good for me. I know I can live with less, and the thing is that I'm going to Europe & Australia - not the ends of the earth where I can't get basic things if I figure out that I need them. If I don't think I'm going to need a coat and that a sweater will suffice - then I get there and I DO need a coat, I can stop in a shop & BUY one.
In reality, there is a part of me that relishes the idea of shedding the vast majority of my "trappings" for that time. Allowing me to roam free without it all. Leah says she can't imagine ME without my palm pilot, iPod, laptop, and cell phone - because these are the technological things that have made my life easy. But I don't REQUIRE them. Perhaps in this day & age I need my laptop to complete my education...but for a few months, I'm sure I'll be fine.
I do, however, need to buy a compression sack for my skirts. They take up a lot of room believe it or not, and they are SUPPOSED to look wrinkled.

It really cracks me up how important clothes are to women.en wear clothes just to keep from being nude. The discussion of how to wear a suit and how to egt it to England would just bever be blog material for a guy. Either way, good luck. MUD
