New rule - if you speak to me as if I have an IQ less than 70, I am going to call you on it. This includes stating the obvious. I promise you, I will call it to your attention. The next coworker that speaks to me as if I can't grasp simple concepts it going to get kicked, because I assure you - I get things a LOT faster than you do. If this were NOT true, then I would not be helping you with what I perceive to be simple tasks for the 45th time.
My Dad is so sweet. He sent me this email at first thinking I should join this organization - then retracting when he realized it is only for alumnae of certain schools. It is https://secure.85broads.com/public/index. I reviewed their website & the thought is admirable, but I felt compelled to email them with a comment. They are perpetuating a good old boys network for women that is exclusive to certain universities - elitist at best. They fail to take into consideration that this is perpetuating a strong division in class structure. Only those that can afford to attend Harvard & Yale and their equivalents will become members of this. Those that can't are automatically excluded. This defeats the entire purpose of a lot of the work being done by some of its members in other countries. Why encourage decimation of class structure in OTHER countries when you are encouraging it here?
Personally, I think women's networking is imperative for achieving equality for women. I don't believe that we are there yet. However when women self exclude - basis membership solely on academic institution and not taking into consideration merit - we perpetuate the upper middle class/upper class versus "the rest of us" structure. Then again, perhaps - as the great Groucho Marx once said - I would not want to belong to any organization that would have me as a member.

I think any organization that encourages people to be their best is great. I find it kind of interesting that as a class that feel discriminated against, women feel that they need an exclusive organization to improve themselves. I think women are a great addition to the workplace and after working for many years in an almost all male org (Military 1960-1980) I appreciate the civility and understanding all races and sexes bring to our lives.
I love to read a well written blog and feel the same way about stupid people that talk down or impune the intelligence of others. MUD aka Dennis Petty posting at: ridingwithmud@blogspot.com
